Other than the bullets, how different is Jared Loughner from Alex Jones and "mind control" conspiracy nuts?
People are claiming that Tucson shooter Jared Loughner is a liberal but aren't conservatives and libertarians obsessed with being "controlled" by external forces? How do you draw a political line in that whole realm of paranoid thinking?
For example, the gist of global warming denial is fear of having one's fuel-burning and vehicle-buying habits "controlled" by government (combined with a willful ignorance of science and nature's role in human viability). The conspiracy theorist chooses to conclude that atmospheric physics is not the issue, rather "control" by the "elites," etc.
Are people like fringe radio host Alex Jones - who claims that AGW is plot to deny personal freedoms - really any different than "mind control" conspiracy theorists like Jared Loughner?
Go to prisonplanet.com or infowars.com if you aren't familiar with Mr. Jones' ideas. The caption at InfoWars reads: "BECAUSE THERE IS A WAR ON FOR YOUR MIND," and Loughner was definitely worried about "mind control."

Suspected Tucson gunman Jared Lee Loughner registered as an independent voter in Arizona in the fall of 2006, according to the Pima County Registrar of Voters.
Loughner registered to vote on Sept. 29, 2006, identifying himself as an independent. Records show he voted in the 2006 and 2008 elections but is
current listed as “inactive” on the state’s voter roles — meaning that he did not vote in November.

Loughner lacked anything close to a coherent political philosophy — a case strengthened by subsequent glimpses into his personal life that suggests someone
struggling with mental illness.
Loughner’s decision to affiliate as an independent rather than a Republican or Democrat would seem to affirm the sense that while he targeted Giffords in the

This morning on “Good Morning America,” ABC’s Ashleigh Banfield sat down with Zach Osler, a high school friend of Jared Loughner, the suspect in the Tucson massacre.
Osler says his friend wasn’t shooting at people, “he was shooting at the world.” Regarding the high-pitched talk radio and cable news political rhetoric,
Osler says his friend didn’t even watch the news.
He did not watch TV. He disliked the news. He didn’t listen to political radio. He didn’t take sides. He wasn’t on the left. He wasn’t on the right.
Loughner was also a heavy abuser of alcohol and marijuana, at one point taken to the hospital for alcohol poisoning. He was rejected for military service after
failing a drug test.
